Do you know about AES?

Following our recent article on the Automated Import System (AIS), we’re now diving into another key part of Ireland’s customs infrastructure: the Automated Export System (AES).

For exporters, especially those dealing with high volumes of international trade, understanding AES is essential for smoother operations and compliance with Irish Revenue’s regulations.

What is AES?

AES is an electronic system designed to streamline the export declaration process in Ireland.

It allows exporters to electronically submit export declarations, replacing older, manual processes with an automated one. This system aligns with EU-wide customs standards, aiming to facilitate quicker and more efficient trade while ensuring compliance with regulations.

Why is AES Important?

For Irish exporters, AES is not just about efficiency – it ensures that exports comply with legal requirements, mitigating the risk of delays at borders and avoiding fines.

As global trade grows more complex (which it inevitably will), AES will ensure exporters maintain transparency and accuracy in their documentation, giving them more control over the export process.

How Does AES Work?

AES operates through an online platform that allows businesses to submit export declarations directly to Irish Revenue. The system verifies all necessary data, ensuring that customs regulations are met before goods leave Ireland.

Key components of AES include:

  • Export Declarations: These must be filed electronically for goods leaving the EU.
  • Validation Checks: AES ensures the accuracy of declarations, reducing the risk of errors or non-compliance.
  • Customs Notifications: Exporters receive status updates including clearance or potential issues.

For more in-depth details, the Irish Revenue website provides valuable resources for understanding AES fully.

How Does AES Affect Exporters?

Exporters in Ireland must transition to using AES for any goods leaving the country. This has several implications:

  • Efficiency: Faster processing of export declarations can significantly reduce delays in shipping, particularly for high-volume exporters.
  • Compliance: By using AES, businesses can ensure they meet all legal obligations, minimising the risk of fines and penalties.
  • Visibility and Tracking: With real-time notifications and updates from Revenue, exporters can track the status of their shipments throughout the process.

Roles & Responsibilities in AES

It’s important for businesses to understand their role when using AES.

According to Revenue, exporters must:

  • Ensure the accuracy and completeness of all submitted information.
  • Retain copies of the electronic declaration and related documents for audit purposes.
  • Respond to any queries or requests for further information from Revenue promptly.

For more detailed guidelines, visit Revenue’s roles and responsibilities section.

Transitioning from AIS to AES

If you’re familiar with the Automated Import System (AIS), you’ll find AES operates similarly in terms of electronic submissions and real-time notifications.

Many of the principles of AIS carry over to AES, making the learning curve manageable for exporters already accustomed to the digital customs framework.

The Future

AES marks a significant advancement in Ireland’s export system, offering a more efficient, streamlined process for exporters.

As international trade continues to evolve, systems like AES ensure that businesses can navigate customs regulations smoothly, reducing the chances of costly delays or non-compliance.

For any business engaged in exporting goods from Ireland, getting familiar with AES is not just recommended—it’s crucial.

Do you know about AIS?

Efficient customs processes are essential for keeping businesses competitive and for companies importing goods into Ireland or the UK, the Automated Import System (AIS) offers a streamlined solution.

What is AIS?

AIS is Ireland’s national electronic platform that processes and validates import declarations, ensuring that goods meet all customs requirements quickly and accurately.

It automates key processes, including duty calculation, risk assessment, and customs clearance, reducing paperwork and processing times.

For businesses regularly dealing with imports, AIS is critical to avoiding delays at the border and ensuring compliance with customs regulations.

How Does AIS Benefit Your Business?

AIS provides some important advantages for importers:

  • Faster clearance: By processing declarations electronically, AIS speeds up the entire customs process. Your goods are cleared in real-time, ensuring minimal disruption to your supply chain.
  • Reduced errors: Automated validation ensures that your declarations are accurate and compliant, helping to avoid costly mistakes and potential penalties.
  • Seamless integration: AIS can integrate directly with other systems, allowing for smoother operations and full visibility over your imports.
  • Duty management: The system automatically calculates duties and taxes owed, helping you to better manage costs and avoid surprises.

Staying Compliant and Staying Competitive

As customs regulations become more complex, staying compliant is more important, and arguably more difficult, than ever.

AIS offers the tools to ensure your business is meeting all legal requirements while staying competitive.

Our customs team can help you understand the impact AIS can have on your business, ensuring your goods are cleared quickly, accurately, and with full compliance. Drop them a message at customs@translandgroup.com.
